We recognise sustainability as a business approach that will contribute to creating long-term value and positive impact for our service users, customers, colleagues and the wider society. Linked to this commitment will be a series of “Sustainability in focus” campaigns. The intent of this is to share what we are doing to be more sustainable and encourage others to follow suit.

Vita’s energy saving tips

Less is more

As a rule of thumb, if a device is plugged in then energy is flowing. It takes only 2 hours to fully charge your laptop which can then last for up to 4 hours. Fully charge your laptop twice per day and it could last afull working day. This is good for your laptop battery and will also save you money on your energy costs.

Switch that plug off

How many unused appliances are currently plugged in around your home right now? Toaster, oven, microwave, games console? Charging your iPhone…. again? The average annual electricity bill is £679 with a massive 10% of this being attributed to “Phantom Energy”. If it’s not in use, turn it off

Boil what you need

According to the UK Tea Council (yes, that’s a real thing), we drink 165m cups of tea and 70m cups of coffee each day. If, as figures suggest, we habitually boil twice as much water as we need, we could be needlessly wasting some 3,525 tonnes of CO2 every day. Top tip: Use a thermal flask to keep your water hot.

Water awareness

Population growth, poor water management, and climate change mean that England could run dangerously low on freshwater provisions in just 25 years! The average person uses 140 litres per day on hygiene, cooking, cleaning and drinking. Top Tip: Put a plastic bottle in your toilet tank and it may save five gallons of water every day.

1 degree = 10% saving

Latest figures estimate that the average household spends over £600 on natural gas annually. Turning down your thermostat by just 1 degree could save 10% on your gas bill. Top Tip: Steam your veg, it uses less water than boiling and is quicker, so you’ll use less gas (it also keeps more nutrients in your veg)
