At Pennine MSK Partnership, we’re proud of the breadth and depth of care we offer – but some of the most transformative work happens in areas that aren’t always in the spotlight. One such area is our Fracture Liaison Service (FLS), which is making a remarkable difference to patients’ lives in Oldham.
What is the Fracture Liaison Service?
The Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) is a specialist service that identifies people aged 50 and over who have experienced a fragility fracture – a broken bone caused by low trauma, such as a fall from standing height, often linked to osteoporosis. Once identified, patients are contacted for a bone health assessment. If they’re found to be at high risk of future fractures, the team recommends bone-strengthening treatments to reduce that risk.
This proactive approach is vital. The Royal Osteoporosis Society has described FLS provision in England as a ‘postcode lottery’, with significant variation in quality and reach. The government has committed to achieving 100% coverage by 2030 but, thanks to the dedication of our Pennine team, Oldham is already leading the way.
What’s the impact of the Fracture Liaison Service?
In 2022, Pennine MSK, in partnership with the Greater Manchester Integrated Care Board, invested in Oldham’s FLS by employing two full-time specialists – a Nurse and a Pharmacist – dedicated solely to this work. Before this, FLS was delivered on an ad hoc basis within the Rheumatology Service.
The results have been extraordinary. In 2022, just 23% of fragility fractures were assessed. By 2025, that figure has soared to 92%. According to the Royal Osteoporosis Society, this increase in assessments has prevented 41 fragility fractures, including 16 hip fractures, saving £502,330 and releasing 373 bed days over two years. If this rate continues, over five years we could prevent 255 fractures, including 101 hip fractures, saving £3.1 million and freeing up 2,343 bed days.
