As part of Vita’s commitment to living and operating more sustainably, we’ve put together 5 top tips for a more sustainable lifestyle

1. Do you really need to send that email?

Every email needs energy to be sent and stored. The average office worker emits 0.6 tonnes of C02 a year just through email activity. That’s the equivalent of a small giraffe in weight or the emissions of driving from London to Edinburgh over 3.5 times!

2. Have you joined the air fryer trend?

The benefit of an air fryer is it can be healthier (if you use less oil than other cooking). They are smaller, quicker to heat up and faster at cooking which all means they are more energy efficient. Downside is they are made of plastic and could quite easily become another single use item.

3. Eat a lot of red meat?

Red meat by far has the biggest carbon footprint; beef generates over 60 kilograms of greenhouse gas emissions per kilogram of meat produced. “Meatless Mondays” Skipping one serving of beef every Monday for a year saves the equivalent emissions to driving 348 miles in a car.

4. Running the tap before filling your glass?

Running the tap to cool the water before filling your glass can waste 0.5 liter each time. Fill a jug with water and pop it in the fridge to save on waste and have cool water ready to go.

5. Plane, train, car or coach?

We all know to take the train rather than drive if we can. And that flying has the greatest impact. But how do they really compare?

Bar chart displaying CO2 emissions per passenger per kilometer traveled for various transport modes. Domestic flight tops with 133g CO2 and 121g secondary effects. Eurostar ranks lowest at 6g.
